Isaac Hayes releases his biggest hit single, "Theme From Shaft". The song would rise to #2 on the Billboard Soul Singles chart, #6 on the Easy Listening chart, and #1 on the Hot 100. The following year, "Theme from Shaft" would win the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

David Cassidy reached the top of the UK singles chart with a cover version of The Rascals' 1967 hit, "How Can I Be Sure". It would be the first of two UK #1's for Cassidy, but in America it stalled at #25.

Exile's "Kiss You All Over" hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, where it stays for the next four weeks. The song rose to #6 in the UK and made the Top Ten in ten other European countries.

Columbia Records releases Bruce Springsteen's sixth studio album, "Nebraska". It started out as a collection of songs that The Boss recorded as demos on a 4-track tape recorder. Instead of re-recording them with The E Street Band, he decided to release them as they were. The album would climb to #3 on Billboard's Top LPs & Tape chart and the same rank on the UK Official Album Chart. It has since been certified Platinum for sales of over one million copies in the United States.

Released in June, 1974, the collection contains hits from the band's 1962–65 period, and was compiled by their old label, Capitol Records, while the band was still with Reprise Records. "Endless Summer" went on to sell over 3,000,000 copies.
